Designing a bathroom takes planning, but a few smart choices can completely change how it feels and functions. These six top tips for luxurious bathroom design can transform your space into a stylish and functional room. From upgrading your lighting and storage to choosing better fixtures and finishes, each step improves comfort and style.

Bathrooms are the new kitchens, so make it a space you enjoy spending time in every day.

1. Make clever use of tight bathroom spaces

Bathrooms are inherently compact, so creating a sense of space and comfort requires thoughtful planning. Use clever layouts, light tones, reflective surfaces, and careful proportioning to make even a small bathroom feel open and inviting.

The key takeaway tip in designing a luxurious bathroom is to consider space efficiency, you should be looking to create a design where there is one central space you can access the bath, shower, W.C. and basin from. This space can be less than a 1 metre squared for a very constrained bathroom. Secondly,  having as much storage as possible is always a wise move, both vanity units and a cabinet behind a mirror are great ways to achieve this.

2. Balancing style and practicality in your bathroom design

A beautiful bathroom is useless if it’s inconvenient. Position shower controls so they’re easily reachable without drenching your arm while waiting for hot water. Small practicalities like this make a huge difference to daily living and the kind of thing that will grate otherwise.

Likewise when choosing materials, decide what you are willing to flex on.

Take sinks for example, think about how you want to balance looks and practicality. Ceramic sinks are popular because they’re easy to clean, durable, and match most bathroom ranges. For more personality, try stone, metal, concrete, or composite materials. Marble feels luxurious but can stain, while composite stone offers a similar look with less upkeep. Concrete adds character but needs sealing. Metal options like copper age beautifully and can be repolished, while stainless steel stays sleek and is more forgiving day to day. All of these small details should be considered carefully before making your choice.

3. Keep your bathroom neat and happy

A cluttered bathroom feels chaotic. Storage should never be an afterthought. Recessed, well-ventilated storage preserves the clean, rectangular geometry of the room while keeping surfaces clear. Under-sink cabinets or mirrored cupboards rarely suffice without enough space, items spill onto ledges and floors, undermining the room’s calm.

Storage and clever layouts are always on our agenda. Floating vanities and hidden cabinets make busy family bathrooms feel organised without feeling cluttered. Even small spaces can be really practical if you plan carefully.

Top design tip

Recessed shelves in shower enclosures eliminate the need for tacky suction-cup racks and keep shampoo, soap, and other essentials off the shower floor. This small detail dramatically improves both aesthetics and usability.

4. Smart bathroom tech for style and function

Smart tech is having a bit of a moment when it comes to bathroom designs. Whereas underfloor heating continues to be popular, clients are loving app-controlled showers, heated mirrors, speakers and even taps that remember your favourite temperature. Bathrooms are becoming really intuitive and personal.

5. Creating a luxurious look with tiles, paint, and custom finishes

If you want a more luxurious look to your bathroom, don’t simply tile around wet areas or behind sinks. Elevate the space by creating datums with tiles, paint and leftover kitchen worktop pieces – matched lines across multiple materials/surfaces. Play with microcement, bold tile patterns, or bespoke edging to give the room a high-end, cohesive feel.

Think in grids for premium spaces
For a truly luxe aesthetic in your bathroom, align walls, shower trays, baths, and storage along a tile-based grid. This requires careful planning (ideally using architectural drawings) but the discipline of a coordinated layout delivers a surprisingly sophisticated result.

6. Lighting that makes your bathroom feel bright and inviting

Often overlooked, lighting can make a huge difference. We’re always talking about layered lighting. Bright, functional lights like spots for tasks, softer ambient light for a relaxing bath, and subtle night-time lighting so you are not fumbling in the dark. It is amazing how a few layers of light can completely change the feel of a room.

A few top design tips we always pass on:

  • Lights with integrated fans are great for smaller bathrooms, giving less clutter and more function.
  • Side lighting is much more flattering than lighting straight from above, especially at the mirror.
  • Mixing layers of lighting lets you change the mood depending on whether you are rushing in the morning or unwinding in the evening.
